Historical Background – Foundation of Constitutional Development for NDA

The origin and growth of the Indian Constitution has deep roots in Indian history during the British period starting from 1773 onwards, when several important British Acts were passed for the governance of India. British administration in India till 1858 was primarily under the East India Company, whose rule was later replaced by the British Crown after the Revolt of 1857.

The British came to India in 1600 as traders through the East India Company. In 1765, they acquired the Diwani Rights (revenue collection) over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. The Company, which began purely as a commercial corporation, gradually transformed into a political and administrative authority.

With this increase in political control, there arose a need to regulate the activities of the East India Company. This was achieved through a series of Constitutional Development Acts passed by the British Parliament, such as:

  • Regulating Act, 1773 – First step towards central administration.
  • Charter Act, 1813 – Ended trade monopoly (except tea & China).
  • Government of India Act, 1858 – Transferred power from Company to Crown.

These Acts marked the beginning of modern constitutional governance in India and form the foundation for topics like Indian Polity and History in NDA preparation. Understanding this historical background is essential for answering NDA GAT polity questions accurately.
